While traveling, even Ninja have to sleep sometimes. In order to do so without being found, one trick was to climb to the top of a tree and make a hammock with his cloak. Since Ninja's cloaks are rather long, the ninja would make it into a spider web-like bed. This kept him hidden from passerby, and gave him a good vantage point at the same time.
Because the Ninja did not have compass, but he also needed to know where he was going, there were different tricks that could be used to tell him what direction he was headed. One such trick was to obtain a foot-long stick, and shove it straight into the ground. After doing this, he would take a stick with a random length and put it at the end of the stick's shadow. After waiting fifteen minutes, he would place another stick at the new shadow's end. Then, if it was before noon, he would place his right foot on the inner stick, and left foot on the outer stick, and he would then be facing directly North. After noon, he would place his left foot on the inside, and his right foot on the outside.
