Shuko and Ashiko
![]() ![]() One of the neatest weapons/tools that the ninja used were shuko and ashiko. These weapons were metal claws that were attached to a person’s palms and soles of their feet. These enabled a ninja to climb trees or wooden fortresses with remarkable ease, and they probably also helped spark the rumors that ninja could turn into animals. These claws were very useful during fights, for they could greatly increase the damage done with kicks and punches. Another use during a fight against someone using swords or knives was the ability to snap the blades in two. This was done by parrying the blade between two claws on the palm, and then twisting. It would not work very well against high quality swords, however. Also, there were a not as widely used type of claws called nekade. These were claws that attached to fingers individually. Those were preferred by the female ninja.
