Kamas are slashing weapons that are usually used in pairs.  They were very useful for catching weapons that were being used against them.  They originated as farming tools that were used just like sickles.  If the ninja, while they were farming or out in the fields, were attacked, they could effectively use the kamas to defend themselves and/or kill the attacker.  The kamas were also further developed as weapons into kusarigama, which had a weighted chain attached to the handle or where the habdle met the blade.
