Ninja-to

The Ninja’s sword, a ninja-to, was not used as much as, and was much different than, a samurai’s sword, which was called a katana. The Ninja themselves were farmers and outlaws for the most part, and they were much poorer than the samurai. This made them unable to pay for high-quality, high-carbon swords that the samurai were able to buy. Their swords were rather poorly made because of the cost and lack of resources, and so they did not have the razor sharp edge of better swords. Their swords had a more saw-like edge, and a sharp point. The Ninja, while others would slash with their swords, would mostly make stabbing motions with theirs. The rough edge of the sword was then pulled back and used to saw at their opponent. The sword could also be used as a small step by jamming the blade into the ground and then stepping onto the hand guard. The Ninja sword scabbard was almost as important as the sword itself. Because the sword was short, usually about twenty-four inches long, the scabbard had room at the end to hide a great number of useful items such as throwing knives, poisons, throwing spikes, or darts. The scabbard was also able to have the closed end come off so that it could be used as a snorkel. A spear head could also be attached to the end to be used as a short stabbing weapon.
